Options – General

This window is accessed via the menu item Options / Other and selecting the 'General' tab.

Options - general

Always keep on top

When this box is checked, UltimaCalc, and all the windows it opens, will remain on top of any other windows currently open. If this option is not selected, UltimaCalc will allow other windows to open on top of it. This option can also be selected from the menu item Options / Always On Top.

Transparent when inactive

With this check box not ticked, UltimaCalc will behave like any normal window when the focus is moved elsewhere. If it is set to always remain on top, it will be fully visible. With this option ticked, UltimaCalc will become partially transparent when it loses the focus. To alter the degree of transparency, click on the Appearance tab.

Main window with no caption showingShow the window's title bar

To make UltimaCalc take up as little space on the screen as possible, uncheck this box to have it hide its title bar, or caption, as shown in the image. You can still drag the window by dragging on the area to the right of the menus. The mouse cursor chnages to a hand when it is over the correct area. This option can also be selected from the menu item Options / Show Title Bar.

Minimise to taskbar

This is the normal behaviour for an application. While the application runs, a button is always present in the taskbar, normally at the bottom of the monitor screen. When the application is minimised, this button remains on the taskbar. Clicking on this button causes the application's window to reappear.

However, because UltimaCalc can be very unobtrusive, some people prefer to not minimise it, and do not wish to have the taskbar cluttered up with a button that is not necessary. The next two options address this issue:

Minimise to tray icon

Instead of using the usual taskbar button, this option uses an icon in the system tray area to the right of the taskbar. When UltimaCalc's main window has been minimised, it can be restored by clicking on this icon.

Hide completely

With this option, UltimaCalc does not have a button in the taskbar. It also does not have an icon in the system tray. When UltimaCalc is minimised, this option will make it seem to have disappeared completely. However, it is still running, but there is nothing that you can click on to make it reappear. The only way to restore the window is by means of a hot key.

Hot key combinations

Two different hot keys can be defined - one to hide the main window, the other to restore it when it is hidden, or to bring it to the front when it is hidden by some other window.

To define a hot key, click in the appropriate box and press a key or combination of keys. Note that some key combinations are not acceptable, and other key combinations may have already been registered by other applications. If you define both hot keys, they must be different from each other.

If you want to use the 'Hide completely' option, you are advised to check that your choice of hot key works, before closing the program. To do this, select 'Minimise to taskbar' and click on OK. The options window will close. Minimise UltimaCalc, then try your hot key. UltimaCalc should reappear. If all is well, you can open the Options window again and select 'Hide completely'.
