Options – Number Format

This window is accessed via the menu item Options / Other and selecting the 'Numbers' tab.

Number format options

Very large and very small numbers are represented in scientific format, in other words by means of a number between 1 and 10 followed by an exponent marker and a number.

The point at which a number is considered to be so large, or so small, as to need this form of representation can be specified in this window. Note that when the chosen precision for showing numbers is small, numbers which would otherwise need more digits than the precision allows will be shown with an exponent marker even if they are within the range selected here.

For example, with the settings shown in the image above, and the precision set to 8 digits, a number of 100 million or greater will be shown in scientific format. When viewing numbers in hexadecimal, similar considerations apply.

Number Grouping

Sometimes it is useful to break up a long string of digits in order to make them more readable. You can choose to have groups of 3 digits or groups of 5 digits, or to have no grouping at all. (Numbers shown in hexadecimal are always shown in groups of four.)

Characters

The controls in the group box labelled 'Characters' allows you to choose which characters are to be used for the decimal point, and for the separator when numbers are shown in groups. You can enter a single character of your choice if those available are not suitable.

Accuracy of Integration

The control in this box sets the accuracy which the integrate function attempts to achieve. The greater the required accuracy, the longer the integration will take.
