Plot Options: Axes

This window allows you to choose the location at which axes are displayed, the ranges of X and Y values to be shown, and whether to show grid lines and labels on the axes.

Options for axes, labels and grid lines.

X axis settings

  • Automatic: Draw the X axis line through the vertical position at which Y is zero, or, if the values of Y do not include 0, draw the X axis at the bottom.
  • Axis at Bottom: Always draw the X axis at the bottom of the display.
  • Axis at Top: Always draw the Y axis at the top of the display. The labels will be positioned above the X axis line.
  • No axis: The X axis will not be displayed.
  • As Specified: When selected, a text entry box will appear. Enter into this box the Y value through which the X axis is to pass, then click on the 'Plot' button to update the displayed plot.

Y axis settings

  • Automatic: Draw the Y axis line through the horizontal position at which X is zero, or, if the values of X do not include 0, draw the Y axis at the left.
  • Axis at Left: Always draw the Y axis at the left of the display.
  • Axis at Right: Always draw the X axis at the right hand side of the display, showing the labels to the right of the axis.
  • No axis: The Y axis will not be displayed.
  • As Specified: When selected, a text entry box will appear. Enter into this box the X value through which the Y axis is to pass, then click on the 'Plot' button to update the displayed plot.

Labels

These two checkboxes allow you to not show labels on the X axis and the Y axis, independently.

Range of X

When 'Auto' is selected, the graph is drawn so that the range of X values shown is the minimum to include the data reasonably neatly. If the 'Auto' check box is not ticked, two text entry boxes will appear. Enter the minimum and maximum X values to be displayed. You can enlarge a plot by entering values which are smaller than those covered by the data. Click on the 'Plot' button to update the display 'Auto' is not selected.

Range of Y

When 'Auto' is selected, the graph is drawn so that the range of Y values shown is the smallest that includes the data reasonably neatly. If the 'Auto' check box is not checked, two text entry boxes will appear. Enter the minimum and maximum Y values to be displayed. You can enlarge a plot by entering values which are smaller than those of the data. Click on the 'Plot' button to get the display updated if 'Auto' is not selected.

Grid options

These 'radio' buttons allow you to choose whether or not to show thin vertical and horizontal grid lines.

The 'Plot' button

Generally, when changes are made to the properties of a displayed graph or plot, the display is updated immediately. However, when data has been entered into a text box, an automatic update would be inconvenient. Instead, click on the 'Plot' button when you have finished entering data. You can also just hit the 'Enter' key.
