View Modes

The view mode is selected from the Format menu. The currently selected view is indicated by a small marker, and also in UltimaCalc’s title bar if the view mode is not Standard. These view modes can be conveniently selected by using shortcut keys.

Standard

This is the view mode that UltimaCalc starts up in. Numbers whose values are in the range 0.001 to just under 10000000000 (or 1e10) are shown in this format, without any exponent being shown. Values outside this range are shown in scientific format, with one digit in front of the decimal point, and an exponent to indicate the power of ten to which the number is to be multiplied. This range of values can be changed by using the Options - Number Format window.

Engineering

Values of magnitude from 1 to just under 1000 are shown as in Standard mode, without an exponent. Magnitudes outside this range are shown with 1, 2, or 3 digits before the decimal point, and with an exponent that is a multiple of 3, except that exponents from -18 to +15 are shown as the corresponding engineering suffixes. Also, in this view mode, the engineering suffixes are available (and the standard ones are disallowed, as otherwise the suffix 'm' would be ambiguous.) Compare this mode with the Scientific 3 mode described below.

Scientific 1

This mode always shows numbers with a single non-zero digit before the decimal point and an exponent.

Scientific 3

This shows values of magnitude from 1 to just under 1000 as in Standard mode. Magnitudes outside this range are shown with an exponent that is a multiple of 3, and with 1, 2, or 3 digits before the decimal point. This is similar to ‘Engineering’ mode, but the standard suffixes remain available and the engineering suffixes are disallowed.

Hexadecimal

Shows numbers expressed in hexadecimal. As for decimal numbers, the exponent value (indicated by an 'x') represents the number of digits by which the decimal point has been moved to the left. If no exponent is shown, spaces are inserted to form groups of four digits where possible.

Time and Date

This mode is used for viewing times and dates. If the window width is inadequate, the displayed result may be truncated. Widen the window if this happens.
